We are continuously reminded that movement is health, but its beneficial effect is multiplied if pleasure is combined with it. And really a lot of pleasure can be given you by trekking on the hills of the island of Ischia, from which you can enjoy unforgettable views of the Gulf of Naples and smell the scents of the countryside or of the woods. All that is required is a good pair of shoes suitable for the occasion, water and a pinch of passion for wellness.
The effects are quickly felt: body cells oxygenate more thanks to the clean air, circulation is more fluid, serotonin (the neurotransmitter of good humor) grows as you get closer to the destination.
The most scenic paths of the island are concentrated around the Epomeo peak, which dominates Ischia from its 800 m. The majestic peak can be reached from several starting points, but the most beaten paths start from the picturesque church of Santa Maria al Monte in Forio or from the center of the village of Fontana. Both are walks of medium difficulty. The first is longer, it crosses initially vineyards and then it plunges into the thick Falanga wood, with the characteristic refuges created inside huge boulders in green tuff. The second is shorter, it passes through shady chestnut woods and offers sweeping views of the southern part of the island and the mainland.
When you are almost near the top of Epomeo, stop at the hermitage of San Nicola, a recently restored little church and an authentic art treasure chest. After having earned the summit with some attention, the view leaves your breathless. When the sky is clear, you can see as far as the island of Ponza, as well as the Matese massif on the mainland. If, on the other hand, some low clouds make you focus on shorter distances, your attention will certainly be captured by the sculptural form of the second highest peak on the island, Pietra dell’Acqua, so called because of channel system for rainwater collection.
